José Mário dos Santos Mourinho Félix, GOIH, known as José Mourinho, is a Portuguese professional football manager and former football player. He is the manager of Premier League club Manchester United. He has yet to comment to the claims brought before him by the Spanish tax authority.
His representative on Tuesday issued a statement saying that his client has not gotten any notification of tax action by the Spanish authority.
Mean while his representatives have gone ahead to make public the statement of his tax obligation which he has fully complied to. The investigation was opened after the Spanish tax authorities informed the Public Prosecutor's Office about perceived discrepancies in the data, with a Madrid judge now set to determine the next stage of the process.
Jose Mourinho, who lived in Spain from June 2010 until May 2013, paid more than €26m in taxes, with an average tax rate over 41 per cent, and accepted the regularisation proposals made by the Spanish tax authorities in 2015 regarding the years of 2011 and 2012 and entered into a settlement agreement regarding 2013.
A judge will decide whether the matter will go to court. A spokesman for the Manchester United manager said: “José Mourinho has not received any notification with regards to the news published today. To this date, neither the Spanish tax authorities, nor the public prosecutor have contacted José Mourinho or his advisers who were hired for the inspection process.
Last year, Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and his father Jorge were found guilty of tax evasion on the Argentina international's image rights, with more than 4m euros (£3.52m) owed in back payments.
